In today’s video we are taking a look at our first Master League battles of Season 9. We are using the same team which helped us reach Legend Rank in Season 8. This team consists of a Groudon lead with Best Buddy Dialga and Togekiss in the back.

The main idea behind this team comp is to lure out the Melmetal using Dialga, opening up the opportunity for Togekiss to sweep in the back. Locking Melmetal into the Dialga match-up forces the opponent to debuff themselves with Superpowers, at which point Groudon comes back in and can farm with Mud Shot, loading up on energy. With Melmetal gone, the hope is that there is not a second Steel type (excluding Dialga) and Togekiss is generally very good against the majority of the meta with 2 shields.

Groudon is running Mud Shot in place of Dragon Tail as it performs better against the Steel types. It is important that Dialga be best buddy with a minimum IV floor of 15/14/12 for best results (a lower DEF IV stat can also work, but will not benefit as much in specific scenarios against non-best buddy Dialga). The best buddy boost is important for Dialga to reach a break and bulk point against opposing Dialga. Both Thunder and Draco Meteor work but I have found that Draco Meteor is better to have in a lot of shields down scenarios. Togekiss is running a standard move set of Ancient Power and Flamethrower, I think this move set is ideal.

Overall, I was able to go 14-11 with this team and climb to 2886 on day 1 of Master League action. This includes a 3-7 start, including an 0-5, so we were able to bounce back and go 11-4 in the final 3 sets. Despite some of the changes in the meta including the introduction of Zacian, this team still has a lot of play and I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a ML team.

In this video we use a team consisting of: Groudon (Mud Shot, Fire Punch*, Earthquake), Best Buddy Dialga (Dragon Breath, Iron Head, Draco Meteor) & Togekiss (Charm, Ancient Power, Flamethrower).

* denotes Legacy move (may require Elite TM).
